Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit.
BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition. Competitions are held regularly around the area and interstate for those students interested in competing. Students are never forced to compete, but are encouraged to try it out and see if this is an avenue they would like to take in their training. Click here to read more.

Originally intended to cater for those who worked in the security industry, the demand and popularity grew beyond expectation. When we first started with Chikara Martial Arts, karate was going to just be a sport to help our 8 year old son with his coordination and listening skills. However, it quickly became more than that. Zen Do Kai has made a huge difference to his self-confidence, focus, concentration skills and self-esteem. Whether someone is 10, 20, 30 or older, you learn a lot about yourself, your abilities and respect for others. You realise that even if you fall, you have the strength to get up, and even if you fail, you become a stronger person from it. It's been very inspirational to watch young people giving it their all, being challenged by their teachers, supporting each other in the training, and reaching places that they never thought they could be.Thank you to all instructors, especially to Kyl, Linda and Jono. Thank you for the beginning of what will definitely be a longer journey for the little guy.
We cannot recommend Chikara enough. This place is not just somewhere to get fit but a community. The “shed” as it is commonly referred to has become a safe place for our kids and the head instructor a trusted and respected role model. Since starting school in 2013 our son experienced issues with certain children. We had encouraged him to try various self-defence classes and he finally agreed to give Zen Do Kai at Chikara Martial Arts a try. After the first class, not only was he hooked but so was his little sister. The changes in him have been nothing short of amazing. His self-confidence has grown, he is more disciplined and he has more respect for himself, his peers and authority. The Owner and Head Instructor, Kyoshi Kyl is a part of the daily operations of the Club (and it is a Club) and he has brought the best out in our children.
The answers to the FAQ’s regarding our memberships.
- Are there contracts? No. We do not do contracts on any of our direct debit memberships.
- How do direct debit memberships work? We direct debit weekly from either a nominated bank account or credit card. We store the card on our system (we cannot duplicate it) and debits occur over 52 weeks of the year (even over the Christmas break), as we base our memberships rates across a full year and determine a weekly amount. Direct debit we have found is the best way to get real value for money in your training, and have flexibility in your training routine.
- What is the annual fee? The annual fee covers insurance, and affiliation to the organizations CMA and PDB Brisbane are members of. All casual and direct members must pay this fee when they join. This is renewed for every member on or around the 1st July every year.
- How do I train casually? Casual rates mean you can train in one class for a one off fee per class (If you choose to do two classes in one night, you must pay for two casual classes). You can also purchase a 10 pass casual card, and by doing this you will get a discount, and get one class for free. When you come in, we mark your name off, and the system records your visits. We then let you know when you are on your last visit, and you can top it up on our system or eftpos).
- Do you sell gear? Yes we sure do! We sell everything you need, and make sure that sell QUALITY gear. We stock training equipment from such reputable Australian owned brands as Punch Equipment, Punish, Old Man Strength and others. We sell all Gis (uniforms) you need, as well as a big range of Muay Thai shorts, wraps and ankle supports.
- How do I cancel or suspend my membership? To cancel your membership, you need to fill in a form by doing this either online (we can email it to you then you scan it and return it back), or just come down in person and do it over the counter. We understand that sometimes life gets in the way, and circumstances change. You can restart your membership if you cancel at any time.
To either suspend or cancel, we need 2 weeks’ notice to do so. Suspensions are done for a minimum of 3 weeks, and a maximum of 3 months.
Please remember that the fees continue to be charged regardless of public holidays, school holidays, and the Christmas / New Year break, as these breaks are factored into the overall weekly debit amount.
If you have any other questions at all regarding memberships, please do not hesitate to ask our front desk staff, and they will gladly help you.
